Resort Style Living
The McKinnons bought their home with the intention of doing ‘something’ with it. For two years they had made do with the space, sacrificing their garage for a gym and quite small roomd for their growing children. When they contacted Total Lifestyle Builders it was to reclaim their garage and created a proper wing with living space for the kids.
The Process
No Ordinary House
The original house had been designed around a central courtyard and pool leading down to the canal. With a parent’s retreat, kitchen, living and dining seperated from the childrens’ rooms by the garage, the home had an oasis feel which was essential to any additions.
The private oasis atmosphere wasn’t the only feature that needed to be considered in the re-design. It was not an ordinary building, with a 2-pitched roof and cathedral ceilings which brought challenges to internal spatial planning during the design process. However, these were character features of the home which needed to be retained.
Kids’ Wing
The first step in providing the McKinnon’s children, now three young adults, their extra space was to demolish their existing bedrooms. A new family room and gym were built behind the garage, opening out on to the pool and courtyard. Large bi-fold doors were added to open the space up to the courtyard, creating an indoor / outdoor feel.
Three large bedrooms with ensuites and individual balconies were built on the second level. With balconies and windows all overlooking the lush pool, the new bedrooms continued with the resort feel of the rest of the house.
Finishing Touches
During constuction, the McKinnons decided that they too needed a little more space, adding onto their existing master bedroom and renovating the ensuite. Finally the house was fully rendered to modernise the exterior while tying together the overall look of their new home.
